About the Internet Council

The Internet Council has existed for ten years and currently has eighty (80) members. At its inception, the Council was well-positioned to tackle the important issues for transacting in an online environment. The Council is also the natural home to the WEB ACH application and developed the operating rules that came into existence in 2001. The Council has evolved over the years and has a history of expertise in cutting edge issues in the payments environment, such as authentication, data security, risk management, compliance, emerging technologies, and remote channel management (e.g., online banking).

Membership Value Proposition

  • Enrich payments systems knowledge through educational sessions, timely communications and Council-developed resources
  • Acquire a competitive edge through exposure to the most current analysis and data available about industry trends
  • Gain a forward-thinking perspective of the industry, facilitating greater understanding of the issues and the impact on the participant’s organization
Network with a diverse body of industry thought leaders and stakeholders actively involved in shaping the direction of a comprehensive scope of payments issues
  • Influence and shape tomorrow’s ecommerce infrastructure through participation in Council projects and initiatives

Current Internet Council activities include:

  • Discovering tools for risk assessment, identification of current and future risk issues, and analysis of security issues and relevant solutions scenarios
  • Exploring stronger authentication techniques to mitigate the risk of sophisticated fraudulent attacks in the ecommerce environment, including the growing support for migration to two factor authentication as driven by regulatory agencies and other influences
  • Formation of an advisory group to the Online Payments project
  • Greater engagement of the online merchant community
  • Addressing the opportunities and challenges presented by the increasing adoption of Internet-initiated transactions, including perspectives on rules and risk management issues
